I'm in the same boat, as much as I like Master of Orion, I kind of dislike the recent trend of paying a bunch of money for a game that isn't ready yet. Pledging money to fund development via Kickstarter in exchange for a bennie of some sort is one thing, but paying full price for an incomplete product, not so much. Just my opinion, though, I'm sure there are compelling arguments to the contrary.

What's really always impressed me is the fact that computer games have not been hit by inflation over the decades, and have actually become dramatically cheaper today when inflation is adjusted.
What's an average game today... $50 bucks? Maybe $40 if it's on sale? I remember Atari ST games in the late 80s were between 35-50 bucks. Early `90s PC games for my smoking fast x386 were about the same.
Today, those prices are in the ballpark of what a new game costs, though the purchase power of the dollar has shrunk. According to the CPI inflation calculator, $50 in 1985 has the purchase-power of $110.09 today. Kinda amazing, eh? No wonder it was so hard to convince my parents that I wanted...er... NEEDED that hot new computer game all my friends were getting.

That's only semi-true, when you look at new games like the latest Star Wars Battlefront and Tom Clancy's Division. Those guys charge you about sixty bucks for the game, but if you actually want to play all of the new content that gets released, you have to either get a "season pass" or buy it all individually. It's about $120 or so to get the full package of Star Wars Battlefront for example, which actually fits with the inflation model you detailed above.

Ahhhh so the store price is only part of the cost. Well; 120 bucks is close to the purchase power of 50 bucks in 1985 so at the worst, today's most expensive games and their expansion packs are about the same as their 1980s predecessors. That's good, I suppose.

Just a note on the whole "Master of Orion" thing -- the new one on Steam or GOG for $50 also gets you MoO1,2, & 3, as a bonus! I picked it up and I like the new one, but it needs a bit more tweaks in order to reach MoO1 or MoO2 status. Beautiful game though.

I am surprised that no one mentioned the Megatraveller games from Paragon Software on these lists. Though my play time of Sundog was limited to a few sessions at a friend's house back in the day, Megatraveller seemed to have a lot of commonality with it in terms of play. Oh, and one cannot forget M.U.L.E. and Ballblazer

I've never heard of "Megatraveller" from Paragon Software. I'll have to look it up!

Not sure if these were on the Atari ST platform (which were the games I listed before), but my all time fav Atari 800 games were Archon, M.U.L.E., Defender, Fort Apocalypse, and Fantasyland 2041 A.D.
The last one isn't a commonly seen game, it seems, but I got absolutely sucked into that. Fantasyland had epic scope, fun features, lots of new graphics to explore. It was a HUGE game in the early 80s, and occupied three double-sided diskettes. It's kinda like Westworld or Jurassic Park, where you are in a huge fantasy theme park but you get stuck in there and everything is trying to kill you. There are six "lands" to explore and survive - Congoland, Arabian Adventure, King Arthur, Olympus, Captain Nemo, and Dante's Inferno. I might be tempted to remake that one some day...

My favorite games were the Sierra games! Every birthday my dad would give me a King's, Police, or Space Quest!

I had bought Megtraveller II but never got into it, think I ran it 2 or 3 times only. Was it good? Also, I seem to remember Battletech seemed to be the same kind of game.

Hi Guys,
I had a ST520 but went on to a 1040 after about a year or so.
Games I remember taking up all my time:
Sundog Falcon F16 Combat Pilot Carrier Command Airborne Ranger Dungeon Master M1 Tank Platoon Elite Millenium 2.2 Defender of The Crown
Not in any particular order and there were many others, but these were the ones I always went back to.

I need to repeat one of the games. Anyone ever play Below the Root? I really, really enjoyed that game. Then I read the books and I loved the game even more.

Alternate Reality: The City was one of my favorites. I played it first on the ST, but had a friend who showed me AR: The Dungeon on the old Atari 8-bit (The City's sequel). Another set of good sandbox style games before they coined the term.
