Like the original, you can purchase upgrade parts that give your ship new or expanded capabilities, but there are more to buy in this version. You can activate the new features by the menu on the upper right. Other upgrades simply affect how the ship functions without user controls, such as making the sub-c faster, etc. we might go more later, but all in time.

I also just got the latest build of the game, and we will be evaluating it to see if it is a beta candidate. Stay tuned!

This version looks pretty good overall. Still some clicks, rattles, and clunks here and there, but very drivable. I think we are going to progress one more version to squash a few little things and to add some new or revised artwork I've completed in the past couple weeks, so we are looking at --MAYBE-- three weeks to beta. Give or take a little, depending on our work/home schedules.
If you want to be part of the beta, get a head start and register on this forum. We will be using this to disseminate the original beta version and subsequent beta revisions, and tracking bug reports and feature requests.

For the most part the hardware compatibility is pretty good. The game is Java, like you said, so it can exist on any number of OS platforms. All you should need is to have your box set up with the Java Runtime Enviroment - www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html. We're ran the game on various types of boxes and eliminated some issues over the past year or two. But overall, it's been pretty good. I recently ran the game on a 12 year old, no-frills Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 with just a few annoying quirks that didn't necessarily prevent gameplay. As for the video cards, most of the computers I own or have access to have integrated graphics. As far as I know there should be no issues with discrete graphics, but that's kinda what the beta is for - throw the game at a whole range of boxes and setups. Oh, and you're welcome. :-)

`Had a casualty during today's bug testing! I was testing out some explosion/burnout animations for the engineering bays (for when a part burns out). I used a cheat code to add a pirate so I could observe the new animation in the bay, but the pirate wasn't hitting me hard enough, as no parts were blowing out. So I added 10 pirate ships! Yes, TEN. Hey, I go big or go home. I have to admit... I was laughing maniacally out loud as the near constant barrage of lasers thundered against Sundog, the screen was flashing strobe-like with the blue glow of shield deflections, which rapidly gave way to the brutal yellow and white flashes of hull damage as the shields couldn't keep up. The parts in the engineering bay were popping and exploding left and right like a fireworks display. I cranked the volume up high to feel the laser blasts. It was AWESOME! Until my sub-woofer blew up. The heavy bass of the pirate's rapid-fire laser blasts at high volume was just too much for it. There was a "crunk" sound and then nothing. My three other speakers are working, but now it sounds like my sound system utilizes tin cans. Bummer... I'll need to buy another speaker system now... But... it was kinda worth it. I packed the bay with shunts to ensure I had lots of burnouts.

That sounds amazing Jake! Too bad about your SUB but if the sound from the game can do that, then I can hardly wait to hear it on my headphones.

Gotta say great job on the graphical improvements, those control nodes look almost REAL, hehe.

Oh those ARE real control nodes! It is easier to photograph real ones than to hand draw them. Eh I am not too worried about the sub. I had those speakers for at least 12 years. At least it went out in style!

I think so- I'd have to look. It was a surround sound system I bought for a PC-based home entertainment system I built when I was in college. It was pretty good for home brew and had a wireless mouse-remote with full screen WinAmp for music and obviously did movies and streaming media. I got my money out of those speakers.
