I would like to share a link to what I think is the best emulation front end, bar none. It is GameEx by Tom Speirs. I have owned a paid license for years now and I think that it was the best money I have ever spent on computer software. Although it is quite complicated to setup it gives you options to auto download and configure just about every emulator on the go! GameEx by Tom Speirs

Nice, I'll definitely have to check that out. I'm a big emulation fan myself, as I'm a bit of a sucker for the nostalgia of playing old games that I can't find any more. Looks like that's a competitor to Hyperspin? Hyperspin seems to be the "standard" but I messed with it and I really don't like it. It's not that it's a bad in and of itself, I just don't like the whole "wheel" front end concept. It seems busy and imprecise, even though it's really just doing the same thing as any other front end emulator launcher is doing.

My 100% favorite Apple emulator is AppleWin. I realistically can't come up with a good reason to use any of the others that are out there, it just works so much better and easier that I quit looking at the others a long time ago. (Of course maybe there's something better by now? But I doubt it)
What I'd like to know is what's the best and most reliable Atari ST emulator? The one I was able to get working with the least trouble was Steem.

The one I was able to get working with the least trouble was Steem. I haven't kept up with the ST emulation scene in the last few years, but I was doing some reading tonight. I was using STeem the last time I was playing Sundog on PC, but I see that the version 3.2 hasn't been updated in years. I just downloaded Hatari for PC and it works, but the window is small and you can't maximize it, or scale it! I ran Sundog on Hatari on a linux OS and I seem to remember that it was much better and scaleable. I had it running on Hataroid for android in the play store and it was very smooth and the sound was good too. That port is VERY slick! Hataroid (Playstore)I also just booted the file on OLD-GAMES.com, the easy setup file 2.32 MB. The exe is just a zip (virus free). I just extracted it and moved the folder to the root of C:. I ran the bat. file but it didn't work, but when I ran DOSBOX as admin (windows 7) it boots perfect...double click Sundog...press 2...pow.....full screen.....CTRL F9 to exit. It even has a game save already there. SUNDOG on OldGames.comHope that helps.

Hey, thanks! I'll give that a try. I never was able to get Sundog to run reliably in an ST emulator which is one of the reasons I never really was able to play that version. I appreciate the info, I'll try it right now. (Oh, wow. The download speed from this place is seriously really low!)

I got it to work. I changed the batch file to match the physical location of my files:
d: cd "Dropbox\Apps\Sundog - Frozen Legacy (1985)\DOSBox" START "" "dosbox.exe" -noconsole
After that, it worked fine when I ran the batch file. The emulator is clearly running with some sort of artificial graphics smoothing, and it looks great. Being used to the super low resolution of the Apple version, it almost feels like I'm playing Jake's new version of the game. :-) (It's also worth noting that by shoving it in my Dropbox folder, I get to play it with the same save file regardless of where I am, although you need to make sure your Dropbox folder lives in the same location on each PC you use, or put multiple batch files that correspond to each PCs file path.)

I tried to play with my BT mouse the other day now that I am on lollipop. I still have the crazy double mouse pointer thing going on. I also booted sundog on linux with Hataroid but it is not scalable to full screen. It seems that the best option is the oldgames.com version. It seems to have some mods to make it run full screen, smoothed graphics, compatibility fixes etc.
Not sure if the oldgames.com version is stable as I haven't played through any levels...only a quick look.
Has anyone played a few levels with that version?

Has anyone figured out a solution for vertical the scrolling glitch as seen on this video for example? I am running Sundog on OS X and I have tried running both the Hatari and NoSTalgia emulators, and I have tried both EmuTOS and original TOS 2.06. I tried changing the hardware settings in the emulator. Has anyone else run across this issue and come up with a solution?

SOLVEDThe problem was I was using too new a version of TOS. Apparently SUNDOG has this problem when running on TOS 1.06 or newer. TOS 1.04 works great. According to this page TOS 1.06 and began to support the Atari STE (and later models) so 1.04 is the last version that appears to work properly with SUNDOG.

I really appreciate when people post solutions to technical problems that they solve them on their own. Thanks a lot for that, I'm sure that's going to help more than one person down the road.

I have no problems running Sundog on STEEM, as long as (as Brian discovered!) I use TOS 1.04 or older. The sound isn't perfect, but the game is certainly playable. The problem with emulation, though, is that one is tempted to use the memory-dump function and cheat. Playing on a real Atari, with its save disk, makes the game much more interesting and fun. Also, the colors are necessarily different on a CRT screen than on a modern screen. I know everyone doesn't have an ST sitting about, though!

Don't have any problems with Steem (either the last official release or Steem SSE). Do have problems running Sundog under SainT.
