So, I'll throw the first pitch. I was playing the game on my Atari ST while my father was working in his shop in the next room. As I strolled around Drahew, a person walked up to me on the street and announced he was one of the design team members that created the game - I think it was Doug Bell, if my memory serves me properly. He asked me if I liked the game. I was so stunned by the situation that I wanted my dad (who was also a Sundog fan) to see it also. I ran to get him, but by the time I got back to the computer enough time had elapsed that Bell assumed that I was stalling and must not like the game. He told me it was too bad I did not like the game, and that if I had said I like it, he would have given me a large sum of credits. I forget how many credits it would be, but it was a LOT, like 100,000 or something in that order. I was SO annoyed at missing that opportunity! lol. Anyone else ever have this happen? I always wondered how rare that conversation was.

That must be a very rare conversation indeed. I can´t tell you how many days I spent playing Sundog, but I never had Doug Bell or any other programmer talking to me...

Oh, I (fuzzily) remember that! After all these years, I can't remember if it was me, my brother, or my dad that got that conversation, or if we got it more than once. Or any details for that matter. I do remember we all thought it was really cool!

Don´t you have the source code of the original game? Should be easy to search for all conversations!

I'd have to dig around, but I think we have the source code to the Apple version, not the ST. Bell was on the Atari ST design team so I don't know if anything like that existed in the "original" original.

Is it possible to search the sundog disk with an ASCII-Editor? I used to do that with a couple of game disks on my Atari St back in the 80's. You can find text parts that way. Unfortunatly, my old Atari ST is not working anymore...

I spent a disproportionate amount of my youth in Drahew, and I never had this conversation.

It must be really rare then! I'm still ticked I didn't say "YES" when he asked me if I liked the game... lol.

I had this conversation and said yes! 'Twas a long time ago and I can't remember how many credits I got for it, but I can remember being really chuffed at the time! :-D I'm sat here at home after a fall down a staircase at work yesterday, saw my little dog sitting in the sun and that triggered my memory and I thought I'd search to see if there was anything about the game online. Many happy hours spent there, though I'm not sure that I have enough time these days to do it again. After Sundog I started playing elite, I used to leave the station and then attack it to have a quick battle with the law.....seems that even today I tend to go for quick blast games that I can grab when the mood takes me. I also got into the Zelda series, started on game boy and progressed to N64, Gamecube, D's and Wi, I've not even started the last two though I played all the others to the end. Sorry to run on, just a bit bored here!!!!

I there. I found back an old ST disk and found, I guess, the text of this conversation. Text is coded by having the byte of the last letter of each word added with #80, so they didn't have to code space characters. Also, some words were in a dictionnary ('+' was used as the word "you"). So I didn't decode it all properly (some words are missing and garbage is still between words), but here it is, hoping I'm not going to be insulted for spoiling anyone after all was described in the thread pretty neat,huh..hi! my name is |wrote the . for this game 85 Wayne Holder .6 dialog you're reading here. Pretty great game, huh?. .Bruce Webster .. original SunDog..?.!.Donald Geddis.. dialog compiler 7.4...MikeNewton ..ship modules 7.4..*.Doug Bell ..library .and integrated the rest.4..#.Andy Jaros ..designed the graphics 7.4?'Glad you like it! Oh,by the way here's $.Enjoy it!= Well, you've got no class. Just for that you won't get the $ I was going to give you!

Wow that is awesome!!!!! Good digital archeology there!
So that's what I fleetingly saw so many decades ago, as I was frantically trying to get my dad's attention. Well, at least it's vindication that I didn't hallucinate the encounter after binge playing Sundog for untold hours. Lol...
Thanks for the info!

I never saw it, but I spent all my time in the Apple version, so that's probably why.

I remember this conversation! I was just playing along, hoping to get mugged so I could blast the thugs and get some credits, when this convo happened. I don't remember exactly how many credits I got, but it was enough that I thought it was awesome! Of course I was 15 or 16 at the time. I may end up spending too many game hours running around trying to discover all the new conversation threads

I must have played Sundog a hundred times, and I had this happen to me twice. Can't remember the name, but I know it happened twice. Once in a bar and once on the street.
